About Us

Breaking Down Educational Barriers

Dr. Kris Nystrom founded Reading the World in March, 2024, in response to research on global literacy rates and decolonizing education. After over three decades teaching and developing literacy programs in America, Dr. Nystrom turned his attention to Africa, where education opportunity is limited but intellectual capacity is not. Recognizing that African nations are abundant in culture, innovation, and human potential, he committed to breaking down the barriers to education by lifting up local values, one village at a time.

Reading the World prioritizes a deep understanding of each community's unique educational needs before seeking productive solutions. This approach ensures that initiatives are relevant and effective, particularly in regions that are only just emerging from colonial oppression.

Our mission revolves around empowerment through education and emphasizes sustainable practices that build capacity within local communities. By collaborating with local officials and village elders, we develop educational responses tailored to specific local needs. This commitment to community-driven solutions positions us as a vital force in transforming the educational landscape for children who cannot access a basic education.
